To start out, I’m going to fruitlessly defend myself against the slings and arrows of the Internet. I think that Giorgetto Giugiaro is the best car designer who has ever lived, and that’s based solely on the Alfa Romeo Brera. If you take the rest of his resume into account, he’s the best car designer of all time. He single-handedly created most of the car design trends of the 1970’s, and I hope he has many more years ahead of him.
Now that’s out of the way, I think that the fact that his name is attached to the shameful Mustang concept that’s being premiered at the LA auto show is terrible. So much of this car is stolen from other recent concepts that I can’t believe that someone as great as Giugiaro did it. The front and rear quarter panels are taken straight off the Camaro, as is the diving hood. The doors are from the C6 Corvette, and the color scheme and paint design are almost identical to the ones on the Challenger concept. There’s enough Mustang fastback in there for it to be recognizable as a Mustang, but the bits from other muscle car concepts is just embarrassing.
The whole concept looks good, but I think that about half-way through the design process, Giugiaro’s team realized that they had no idea how to do a unique take on an American muscle car, so they took bits from the various concepts, some old-school Mustang fastback, and smoothed it all out. The end result is good, but it doesn’t blow my socks off like his designs usually do. I can’t wait to see what he does with the next car he actually designs, though.
