The Tarus II guy was Fred Ricart of Columbus, Ohio, who is still in business. He got written up for it in Consumer Reports. The town was very proud of him because those east coast liberal media types seldom notice us folks in fly-over country.

Jack, I think everyone in this business sold cars at one time or another - I certainly did, and enjoyed myself thoroughly.

On some days, I convinced myself I could treat customers like human beings. They would respect my intelligence, my concern for their needs, and the time and attention I took to help them out ... on other days, I made "2 pound" deals on Dodge Durangos, stole the trade, and seriously considered kicking the guy in the gut before he motored on down the road.

I had to quit once I started enjoying the second kind of day more than the first.

Too bad really ... I think I was making more money then! ; )

Jack,
There are certainly funny stories told within dealerships every day. Of course the stories they tell may not be so funny if you are on the receiving end. That's why I tell people every day that knowledge is the key to surviving the car dealership experience.

The Taurus II story is funny. Of course there were also positive things that can happen when dealers make their own models, like Yenko Chevrolets or Mr. Norm Chryslers, but that is now ancient history. I look forward to more of these stories, particularly if you have more one how dealers can screw you, like I just found out about on my last car when I tried to cash in my extended warranty.
