My parents have always been GM people, which has trickled down to me(though I own a VW).

They are looking to purchase a new Malibu later this year and for the first time in a while, I can honestly say that I don't feel like talking them out of it. Granted, this comes without having driven one or even taking a close up look at one. But based on the press I've read, I stand behind their decision.

Great eye-opening article(even if it was shy on the actual car-related stuff). I can get that countless other places though.

Jo, you need to put a monkey behind the wheel of one of those karts of yours. And by monkey, I don't mean Jack or I.

i, for one, love it. there's only a gazillion other media outlets to tell you the exact same regurgitated information and opinion (read: singular opinion, not plural).

i think Jack really hits the nail on the head here, and, ever so much further than the Malibu, he outlines the hurdle that the big three - er - two - er, 2.5? have to overcome with THIS generation of (monkey) people.

i bumbled around this topic like a teenage boy looking for the clitoris in my review of the C6 corvette elsewhere on this site (but Jack does much better here) - GM's success is no longer relative to their own legacy product - they have to meet and exceed the expectations of the generation of folks reared in japanese cars. therefore, the corvette can't just be marginally more powerful in each successive generation and still be plasticky and cheap on the inside - AND be successful. the new generation of people with the means to afford a vette are going to get inside and immediately recognize that's it's a piece of sh*t. the fact that it's a *gasp* cor-vette won't matter anymore. these people grew up drooling over foriegn cars, not domestic iron.

but alas, i've gone all Gordon Murray here congratulating myself instead of giving credit where credit is due (b*tch better bow down to the engineering marvel of the Veyron and quit swinging from the F1's nutsack).

so, kudos Jack, another great article. next time i see you i'll buy you TWO cokes - one to drink and one for backup.

Ok, so let me get this straight, in a 2400 word article, we don't get to the actual vehicle that is the ostensible subject of the article until 1800 words in. The monkey brain stuff is great, but move along, talk about the freaking car already.
