Current cars are so far and beyond in power, features, electronic nannies than anyone needs. The trend for auto makers to one up each other just drives it further and further into the unnecessary and ridiculous. 8 speed automatics, 20 speaker stereos, reverse cameras (how about give me back my outward visibility???)

I'd gladly take a brand new car built on 15 year old tech. And I'm sure it wouldn't break anyone's bank. Now if someone would just build THAT...

I find it's easy to win drag races in the RX-8, Mark, the trick is to spring the race on them at the last second, so they don't realize they're racing.

65% of the time, it works every time.

But but but but but...

...what's the moral of the story?

People are dumb? Domestic product planners are dumb?
(Yes and yes)

Small cars will (or do) cost more than they should?
(Something is worth what someone will pay you for it)

What should I do, Jack? How should I reply in blog posts and forum discussions? I can't be a good citizen of Teh Interwebz without having a set of talking points to parrot off whenever the situation allows.

I guess until you finish your Glorious Testament, I'll just keep driving and buying (or lusting after, in the case of the spendy ones) cars that I like.

Great article, Jack. Maybe your best Speed:Sport:Life piece yet. You still haven't quite matched the eloquent magnificence of your Car Lounge/Sandy Man-Beaver period, but still informative and entertaining.
