In Japan, as in many countries throughout Asia, the Ford Escape is among the most well-known Ford products and a centrepiece of the company’s customer acclaimed line up of SUVs. Known as the Maverick in China and other select market in Asia, the compact sport-utility vehicle was launched to customers in Asia in 2001 and is now among Ford’s best-selling vehicles both in Japan and the Asia Pacific region.

The Escape/Maverick has always offered customers a nearly ideal mix of functionality and overall drivability—a small, sportier sport-utility vehicle (SUV) that provides the comfort and overall drivability customers demand for in-city driving while delivering the toughness and capability to perform equally well off-road. Giorgetto Giugiaro fashioned and commissioned a project that spilled into stretching horizons, in that he became concurrently – for the first time ever –supplier and customer of the new car. Rather than being a spellbound step into tomorrow, the ultimate outcome of all this is an expression of today – a Ferrari graced by his initials, GG, followed by the digit 50 by way of epitomizing his debut into the world of car design in September 1955 –imbued by an imposing, unmistakable artistry capturing skyhigh ergonomics and outstanding space on board.

Mazda Releases RX-8 Sport Prestige Limited II Special Edition

Mazda Motor Corporation today announced the launch of two upgraded versions of its brand icon RX-8 sports car in the Japanese market. The RX-8 Sport Prestige Limited II received various enhancements to bring it to a higher level of quality, and goes on sale in mid-November. In addition, an upgraded version of the standard RX-8 will also be launched today. Both models will be available at Mazda and Mazda Anfini dealerships throughout Japan.

Lexus Flagship Concept to Debut At 2005 Tokyo Motor Show

The comprehensive renewal of the Lexus product range will reach another milestone at the Tokyo Motor Show next week with the unveiling of a new flagship saloon concept.

First details of the new concept vehicle will be announced at the show on 19 October, sustaining the momentum of Lexus’s development as a global prestige manufacturer.

The flagship concept will be exhibited alongside the GS 450h, a hybrid power version of the newly-launched GS premium saloon range that is set for production in 2006. Combining a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with a powerful electric motor, it delivers performance comparable to a conventional 4.5-litre power unit, while returning fuel economy comparable to a standard 2.0-litre saloon. The combined power output of the GS 450h hybrid system will be around 340bhp.

Also on view will be the radical Lexus LF-A concept, a two-seater supercar powered by a high-output V10 engine. The LF-A concept is 4,400mm long, 1,860mm wide and 1,220mm high.

The new F 600 HYGENIUS is the latest in the series of research vehicles from Mercedes-Benz that point the way forwards for the future. Powered by a zero-emission fuel cell drive with an output of 85 kW/115 hp, the compact-class car with a family-friendly design consumes the equivalent of 2.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres and has an operating range in excess of 400 kilometres. “This represents a major step towards bringing the fuel cell drive up to full production maturity, a goal that we aim to achieve some time between 2012 and 2015,” remarks Dr. Thomas Weber, DaimlerChrysler AG Board Member for Research & Technology and Head of Development at the Mercedes Car Group. “By developing the fuel cell, we are creating a new basis for supplying energy in tomorrow’s vehicles which will make a further lasting improvement to their environmental compatibility.” In addition to the fuel cell technology, the Mercedes-Benz research vehicle also showcases an operating concept with virtual displays, new-style seats and other pioneering technologies designed to enhance safety and passenger comfort. Audi is unveiling a new highlight in the sporty compact segment at the Tokyo Motor Show: the Shooting Brake Concept is a study vehicle offering a further trailblazing interpretation of Audi’s current formal idiom, blending the powerful dynamism of a sports car with a new sense of spaciousness and greater functionality. With its powerful 250 bhp, 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine and quattro permanent four-wheel drive, the Shooting Brake Concept produces a quality of road behaviour that in every respect lives up to its visual impact. The study vehicle sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.0 seconds, and its top speed is electronically governed at 250 km/h.
