It is rare these days that a car completely blows me away and exceeds every expectation of it. Most vehicles sold today are good, and some even fall into the realm of very good, but very few have me walking away saying WOW. The 2024 Chevy Trax is one of those rare vehicles that did have me walking away saying just that.
Many of us know the Trax’s previous iteration as a bargain-basement small car that afforded the driver no real amenities or any semblance of an upscale experience. It was basic transportation, which sold to a price point and nothing more.
Well, forget everything you know about that Trax because the 2024 Chevy Trax is stylish, drives as good as it looks, and comes in at a price point that sincerely made me look twice when I saw how low it was versus the experience it provides the owner. Chevy has given the Trax one of the biggest glow-ups I’ve seen in nearly 20 years of testing cars of all shapes, sizes, and price points.
The 2024 Chevy Trax 2RS looks fantastic. The styling is bold without being gaudy, and the Crimson Metallic paint highlights the surface graphics well. Chevy calls the Trax an SUV, but it looks like a hot hatch in the styling department. The 2024 Trax is attractive from every angle, front to back. LED headlamps and taillamps are standard on Trax.
The interior of the 2024 Chevy Trax features a driver-oriented cockpit with the HVAC and infotainment controls canted toward the driver but still in easy reach of the passenger. The gear lever is a traditional console-mounted shifter, and easy-to-use buttons and knobs control the HVAC and volume settings on the infotainment. The Trax 2RS gets an 11-inch infotainment touchscreen as standard. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard across the Trax lineup.
There are also easy-to-use buttons and knobs on the steering wheel for radio and trip computer functions. A wireless phone charger sits forward of the shifter and can accommodate a large iPhone 13 Pro Max in a case with no problem. HVAC vent adjustments feel solid, as do all the switchgear on the steering column and in the doors.
While some soft-touch materials are in the 2024 Chevy Trax interior, most are nice-looking harder plastics designed to add a splash of fashion to the Trax. The Trax RS interior has red stitching and accents throughout, a flat-bottomed steering wheel.
The Trax 2RS seats are comfortable and supportive over long stints of driving. The Trax 2RS features Evotex seat material, which I prefer to leather. Heated seats are standard on the 2RS.
The 2024 Chevy Trax is powered by GM’s turbocharged 1.2-liter, three-cylinder engine, which makes 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. While this might not seem like much on paper, I never felt like the Trax was sluggish in any highway driving maneuver. It’s quick to get off the line and easily reach highway speeds without drama. The suspension does a good job of keeping ride quality good over various road surfaces without being overly stiff.
The 2024 Trax RS is a massive improvement over the previous car of the same name. So much so that I’m surprised Chevy decided to keep the Trax name. This is a fantastic car, but even more fantastic is the price the Trax comes in at. The base model Trax LS is priced from $21,495, while the range-topping 2RS and Activ models come in at $24,995. The mid-range LT comes in at $23,395. This is absolutely, without a doubt, the car I would buy if I were in the market for a sub-$25k car. But don’t just take my word for it. Since the 2024 Trax went on sale in Q2 of 2023, Chevy has sold 65,255 Trax through the end of Q3. That’s a massive sales success. Chevy has set the benchmark for affordable automotive excellence with the 2024 Trax.
