When Kia redesigned the Niro for its second generation, it moved the needle from “sensible appliance” to “stylish commuter.” We last reviewed the Kia Niro SX here – 2024 Kia Niro SX Touring – Refresher Review.
For the 2025 model year, the Kia Niro remains the bedrock of Kia’s electrified lineup. While the headlines often focus on the flashy Kia EV6 or EV9, the Niro Hybrid—specifically in the high-trim SX—offers a compelling blend of premium features and 50+ MPG efficiency that is increasingly hard to find for under $35,000.

What’s New for 2025?
The 2025 Kia Niro is primarily a carryover from the successful 2024 refresh, but there are a few notable tweaks:
- Expanded Tech: Rear parking sensors and rain-sensing wipers are now standard across more of the mid-tier trims.
- Cold Weather Package: For the SX and SX Touring, a new Cold Weather Package is available, adding an auxiliary heater and heated rear seats—a must-have for those in northern climates who want to preserve electric range/efficiency in the winter.
- Pricing: There is a slight MSRP bump, with the SX now starting around $32,990 (plus destination).

Design: The “Aeroblade” Still Divides
The 2025 Niro SX retains its distinctive look, most notably the “Aeroblade” on the C-pillar. While you can opt for a body-colored blade like our tester, the contrasting black or gray finish remains a signature of this generation. The SX trim strikes a middle ground in styling: it features the sleek LED projector headlights and power-folding mirrors of the top-tier trims but retains 16-inch wheels.
Pro Tip: If you want the 18-inch wheels and the sunroof, you’ll need the SX Touring. However, the standard SX’s 16-inch wheels actually provide a slightly softer ride and better fuel economy (53 MPG combined vs. 49 MPG for the Touring).

Interior: Premium Economy
Inside, the 2025 Niro SX continues to deliver a lot of value and features for the dollar. You’ll find:
- Vegan Leather: The SynTex seating is entirely animal-free and surprisingly durable.
- Dual-Screen Layout: The SX comes standard with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster. It looks modern, though it still requires a wired connection for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (the base 8-inch screen remains the only one with wireless connectivity).
- Premium Audio: The 8-speaker Harman Kardon system is standard on the SX, providing much-needed depth to the cabin’s acoustics.

Performance and Efficiency
The powertrain remains unchanged for 2025: a 1.6-liter four-cylinder paired with a 32kW electric motor producing 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.
It won’t win any drag races—0-60 mph takes nearly 9 seconds—, but that’s not the point of the Niro. The 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) makes it feel much more like a “normal” car than the rubber-band feel of a Toyota Prius’s CVT. On the road, the 2025 Niro SX is quiet and composed, delivering an EPA-estimated 53 MPG city and 54 MPG highway.
Safety First
For 2025, Kia’s “Drive Wise” suite remains one of the best in the segment. The SX includes:
- Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Junction Turning
- Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance
- Highway Driving Assist (HDA)
- Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go
The Verdict: Why the SX?
The 2025 Kia Niro SX is the “sweet spot” of the lineup. It avoids the fuel economy penalty of the Touring’s larger wheels while including the luxury “must-haves” like ventilated seats, a power liftgate, and the upgraded sound system. In an era where the average new car price is nearing $50,000, the Niro SX remains a masterclass in providing a premium-feeling, hyper-efficient daily driver for significantly less.
