BMW came out swinging with the 2027 BMW i3, at least on the spec sheet, as one of the most seriously competitive and feature-rich mainstream EVs yet. The second model in the Neue Klasse lineup lands with 469 horsepower, a provisional WLTP range of 559 miles, and 400 kW DC charging that claims to add 249 miles of range in 10 minutes. Those numbers put pressure on every sedan in the segment, electric or otherwise.

Keep one caveat in mind throughout: every range figure here is provisional WLTP. EPA-rated range, the number that shows up on US window stickers, typically runs 10 to 20 percent below WLTP. BMW’s internal testing, matching the EPA’s regimen, puts the 2027 BMW i3 at approximately 440 miles. That is still class-leading. It is just not 559.
What the 2027 BMW i3 Neue Klasse platform actually changes

This is not a 3 Series with a battery dropped in. The sixth-generation eDrive architecture is a ground-up rethink. Round lithium-ion cells replace the prismatic units from Gen5, delivering 20 percent more volumetric energy density. Those cells go directly into the pack without modular staging between them — a cell-to-pack approach that saves weight and enables a flatter floor. The battery housing itself closes the chassis floor, serving as a structural component that adds torsional rigidity and lowers the center of gravity.

The 800-volt architecture is what unlocks the 400 kW DC charging figure. It also enables bidirectional charging across three modes: Vehicle-to-Load for running external devices directly from the battery, Vehicle-to-Home for pairing with a photovoltaic setup to offset household energy costs, and Vehicle-to-Grid for feeding energy back to the utility. The Tesla Model 3, Mercedes EQE, and Audi A6 e-tron do not offer that package at launch. It is a meaningful differentiator if BMW prices the car at or near its competitors’.

Driving dynamics get a new compute layer called the Heart of Joy, the primary high-performance controller managing drive, braking, steering, charging, and recuperation. BMW claims it responds 10 times faster than previous systems, resulting in more consistent cornering behavior and fewer electronic correction inputs. First drives will tell us whether that claim holds.

The 2027 BMW i3 grows modestly over the G20 it replaces — 2.0 inches longer, 1.5 inches wider, and 1.9 inches longer in wheelbase. Enough to meaningfully improve rear passenger space without abandoning the compact proportions that define the segment.
Exterior and interior
The exterior lands well. BMW preserved the proportions that make a 3 Series identifiable — long wheelbase, short overhangs, sloping greenhouse — and updated the surface language without overreaching. The horizontal rear-light signature works; the flared arches read as purposeful rather than decorative; and the overall shape will age well.

The interior is where opinions will split. BMW has loaded the 2027 i3 with the full Panoramic iDrive system: a windscreen projection running from A-pillar to A-pillar, a 17.9-inch central display, an optional 3D head-up display, and steering wheel controls that only illuminate when their functions are available. The driver-orientation thinking behind all of it is correct. The execution, however, produces a cabin pulled in several directions at once. The clean, understated interiors that defined the best 3 Series generations are not here. What replaces them is technically sophisticated and visually busy in equal measure. Buyers cross-shopping a Model 3 or an A6 e-tron will each find reasons to prefer their alternative’s interior approach.
Where the 2027 BMW i3 stands against the competition
The Tesla Model 3 Performance is the benchmark this car has to beat. It starts around $55,000 and offers a proven charging network, a cleaner interior, and an established ownership experience. The 2027 BMW i3 is expected to land at a similar price point while offering significantly more range, faster DC charging, and bidirectional capability, which the Model 3 does not have. That is a strong paper argument. The Mercedes EQE offers a quieter, more traditionally premium cabin. The Audi A6 e-tron counters with a more coherent interior design and competitive DC charging numbers. Against all three, the 2027 i3’s charging speed and bidirectional capability are the strongest differentiators on paper. Whether buyers pay for them depends on where BMW sets the final price, which has not been announced.
Availability

Production starts at BMW’s Munich plant in August 2026 with European deliveries beginning in the autumn of 2026. The 50 xDrive launches first. The 40 xDrive follows later in the model year. US deliveries are expected in 2027, with both the i3 40 xDrive and i3 50 xDrive confirmed for the North American market. Official US pricing has not been announced. Analyst estimates circulating at the time of publication put the 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive starting between $50,000 and $55,000 — unconfirmed until BMW USA makes an official announcement. EPA range ratings will be published closer to the on-sale date.
