Four years into the G70 generation, BMW has handed its flagship sedan the most comprehensive mid-cycle update in the company’s history, and the headline is not the new taillights. The technology underpinning the refreshed 7 Series and i7 comes directly from the Neue Klasse program, BMW’s next-generation vehicle architecture, which has only previously appeared in the all-new iX3 and i3. The 7 Series gets it first among existing models. Every future BMW will benefit from what debuts here.
The world premiere took place on April 22 at Auto China 2026 in Beijing. Production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing begins in July 2026 as a 2027 model. US availability has not been confirmed.
Design
The exterior is evolution, which is the right call for a car that still reads more contemporary than most of its competitors. The front fascia is cleaner than the outgoing G70’s: slimmer, more vertical kidney grilles meet the inner edges of the daytime running lights, and the lower main lamps are smaller and set more discreetly into the bumper. New Iconic Glow illuminated kidneys are standard, with an optional Individual treatment featuring diamond-cut crystal glass elements, twelve pieces per light. The rear gets the most visible change: redesigned taillights that extend significantly further toward the center of the trunk lid, narrower in form and smoked in finish, closer in character to the wide light signatures BMW has adopted across the Neue Klasse lineup.

For the first time, 22-inch wheels are available from the factory, with 20-inch wheels standard. The more interesting new option is BMW Individual Dual-Finish paint, which pairs a matte lower body with a metallic upper section separated by a hand-painted coachline. BMW says a Dual-Finish car spends more than 75 hours in the paint shop, nearly six times longer than a standard finish, with roughly half of that time in manual work across twelve painting steps. Buyers who want something beyond that can commission special editions or true one-off builds from BMW Individual Manufaktur.

Interior and Technology

This is where the Neue Klasse connection is most direct. The dashboard is redesigned around BMW Panoramic iDrive, running BMW Operating System X. The system centers on the BMW Panoramic Vision, a projection spanning the full lower width of the windscreen from A-pillar to A-pillar, permanently displaying structured driving information in the driver’s eyeline with customizable content visible to all passengers. A 3D Head-Up Display sits above it. The 17.9-inch central touchscreen operates as the primary control interface, positioned in free-cut design next to the steering wheel.

A 14.6-inch Passenger Screen is standard across all variants, a first for the BMW brand. The optional rear Theatre Screen grows to 31.3 inches with 8K streaming, gaming, and video calling. The standard Bowers and Wilkins Surround Sound System runs 18 speakers; the optional Diamond Surround Sound System expands to 36 speakers, 1,965 watts, and Dolby Atmos support. Standard equipment includes multifunction seats, four-zone climate control, panoramic roof, revised ambient lighting, and wireless charging. Materials throughout are leather, wood, metal, and crystal.












Powertrain
The lineup spans mild-hybrid inline-sixes, plug-in hybrids, and a fully electric i7 with substantially improved range. The 740 xDrive uses BMW’s B58 3.0-liter inline-six producing 400 hp and 428 lb-ft of combined system torque; the engine contributes 398 lb-ft, with the 48-volt mild-hybrid system adding a momentary 29 lb-ft boost. A rear-wheel-drive 740 is available in the US market. The 750e xDrive pairs the inline-six with a 197-hp electric motor for 489 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque combined. The M760e xDrive raises engine output to 426 hp and combined system output to 612 hp and 590 lb-ft. Electric-only range is 43 to 51 miles for the 750e and 43 to 50 miles for the M760e, both WLTP-provisional with EPA figures pending.

BMW’s Gen6 cylindrical battery cells, the same technology introduced in the Neue Klasse iX3, replace the outgoing prismatic Gen5 cells with a 20 percent increase in volumetric energy density. The result is a 112.5 kWh net battery pack in both the i7 50 xDrive and i7 60 xDrive, up from 101.7 kWh in the outgoing car. BMW claims up to 452 miles of WLTP range for both variants. Those are WLTP-provisional figures; EPA certification is pending. US buyers should plan for a real-world range 10 to 20 percent below the WLTP numbers, putting the estimated figure somewhere between 362 and 407 miles until the EPA weighs in. DC fast charging rises to 250 kW from 195 kW, with a 10-to-80 percent charge time of 28 minutes. A 10-minute fast-charge session adds up to 146 miles of range on the 50 and 60 xDrive variants.
The i7 50 xDrive produces 455 hp and 487 lb-ft. The i7 60 xDrive steps up to 544 hp and 549 lb-ft. The i7 M70 xDrive makes 680 hp and 748 lb-ft of torque in SPORT mode, rising to 811 lb-ft when Launch Control is active. BMW claims a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds. The M70 uses a 112.4-kWh net battery and has a WLTP range of 352 to 426 miles, with EPA pending. All i7 figures are WLTP-provisional and have not been certified for the US market.

Against the S-Class

The 7 Series has never beaten the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in US sales volume, and this update will not change that overnight. What it does is close specific gaps. The Panoramic iDrive cabin matches the MBUX Hyperscreen in visual ambition and surpasses it in one concrete respect: the Passenger Screen is standard on every 7 Series variant, whereas the equivalent function on the S-Class incurs an additional cost.
On the electric range, the i7’s WLTP figures comfortably exceed the EQS sedan’s 350 EPA-rated miles, though a direct comparison waits on EPA certification. The Audi A8, which completed the German luxury triumvirate for decades, has been discontinued with no direct successor confirmed. The 7 Series and S-Class now split that segment between them.

One area where Mercedes still leads: Level 3 autonomous capability. The pre-LCI 7 Series was one of a handful of production cars certified for Level 3 operation, allowing hands-off, eyes-off driving in specific conditions in select markets. BMW has discontinued it with the LCI, citing low demand, replacing it with a Level 2 system called Symbiotic Drive. The practical difference is that Symbiotic Drive works with the driver’s steering and braking inputs rather than switching off when the driver intervenes, as most Level 2 systems do. It is a more sophisticated Level 2 system, not a Level 3 successor. Mercedes continues to offer Drive Pilot Level 3 on the S-Class in Germany and in approved US states. BMW pioneered the technology in this class and has stepped back from it.

Availability
US availability for the 2027 BMW 7 Series and i7 has not been confirmed. Production begins at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in July 2026, with the 740d xDrive, 750e xDrive, and M760e xDrive following in November 2026. A third M Performance model with a conventional V8 engine joins the lineup in 2027. The 7 Series Protection armored variant is in final development, with a separate announcement expected.
