The 14th annual Petit Le Mans powered by Mazda was a classic 1,000-mile endurance thriller and a more-than-worthy finale for the 2011 American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón. Peugeot Sport Total won its third straight Petit Le Mans after an intense battle with Audi Sport Team Joest as Franck Montagny, Stephane Sarrazin and Alexander Wurz drove to victory.
AF Corse held off Flying Lizard Motorsports and BMW Motorsports for the GTE-Pro win at Road Atlanta in what served as the penultimate round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. Tim Pappas and Black Swan Racing successfully defended their GT Challenge driver and team championships while Eric Lux, Gunnar Jeannette and Ricardo Gonzalez had a three-way tie for the LMP Challenge driver’s championship. CORE autosport earned its first LMPC team championship.
The Speed:Sport:Life team has arrived at Road Atlanta and what a day Thursday was for American Le Mans and the Porsche GT3 Challenge cars.
In the American Le Mans / ILMC series, Simon Pagenaud and Peugeot Sport set the fastest time during the last lap of the 2-hour night practice session with a lap of 1:09.027.
Pagenaud’s lap time was only 0.080 seconds faster than the time set by Romain Dumas in the #1 Audi R18 TDI. The top three cars were all within 0.159 seconds of one another which means qualifying today will be very interesting to watch.
Testing kicked off Sunday at Road Atlanta ahead of the 1,000-mile/10-hour Petit Le Mans enduro set to run on Saturday, October 1st. The pair of diesel powered factory-backed Peugeot 908s topped the fast lap time charts, finishing 1-2 ahead of the two Audi Sport Team Joest Audi R18 TDIs.
The 14th annual Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta is just 9 days away and the entry list is more impressive than ever. The 1,000 mile/10-hour enduro is the final round of the 2011 American Le Mans Series and the penultimate round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. Because of the strong participation in the ILMC this year, many international teams that aren’t seen during the regular season have entered this year’s event. As it stands now, 58 cars will fight for 53 starting grid positions.

After quite a long absence from the Prototype class at Le Mans, Porsche has announced today that they intend to return to Le Mans in 2014 with a works-run LMP1 car. No further details are known about their new race car but we will keep you updated as the story develops.
